Delhi Rises to Dangerous Smog Following Diwali

On Tuesday morning residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered breathing extremely polluted air that fell into the "alarming" level.

Record-Breaking Air Quality Measurements

Several parts of Delhi showed an air quality index above 500, which represents 10x the safe limit set by the WHO.

In some locations, readings of toxic particulate matter soared to of eighteen hundred, amounting to fifteen to twenty times exceeding acceptable limits.

Fireworks Restrictions and Recent Developments

Beginning in 2020, the government had implemented a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their major role to the dangerous pollution that engulfs the capital as colder weather approaches.

Yet in recent months, the newly elected local government petitioned the highest court to seek a modification of the restrictions.

Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – previously criticized by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a compromise between "tradition and ecological concerns".

Judicial Ruling and Implementation

Much to the frustration of environmental and health advocates, the court approved the proposal, specifying that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be set off during specific hours throughout the Diwali.

Throughout the festival evening, there was widespread disregard of the regulated periods across the city, with minimal regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener variety.

Numerous recording stations throughout the capital showed contamination peaking around the night hours to the most severe readings recorded during Diwali in at least recent memory.

Cross-Border Implications

Extensive ignition of firecrackers during Diwali also initiated a dispute with bordering the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab partly blaming worsening air quality in the city of Lahore on pollutants traveling from across the border following the celebrations.

Chronic Pollution Problem

Alarmingly severe levels of atmospheric toxins in the city have persisted as a serious issue for fifteen-plus years, with the condition gradually deteriorating.

Near Diwali, the amount of hazardous airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been found to spike to 70% higher the worst levels ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was formerly considered as the world's most polluted metropolis.

Multiple Pollution Sources

This crisis in Delhi is attributed to a combination of different contributors including transportation pollution, construction debris, development work, waste incineration and smoke from agricultural fires in neighbouring areas of farming communities.

Throughout these areas, agricultural workers regularly set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, producing dangerous pollution that becomes contained over the capital as cooler air sets in.

Public health and economic toll on the nearly 33 million inhabitants residing in the metropolitan zone is significant, according to numerous research.

The contaminated air results in increased incidence of nervous system, heart and circulatory and breathing disorders, and can even lead to malignancies.

Air quality crisis is estimated to be causing 10,000 untimely mortalities per year in the city.
