Disney's Real-Life Moana Trailer Appears Strikingly Like a Animated Film

The first preview for the upcoming real-life version of Moana has been released. Would you believe that, like most of Disney's live-action remakes, it looks a lot like an animated film and much less like a genuine film with real actors?

Breathtaking Imagery Which Keep an Animated Feel

The trailer for the new iteration of Moana is undeniably stunning. It features grand scenery, beautiful soundtrack, and familiar characters. However, it still looks like an cartoon. The exaggerated effects show characters flying, water defying gravity, and Maui transforming into both a bug and a bird. Each of these effects is accomplished through digital effects and CGI. Much like earlier Disney adaptations—such as The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and The Jungle Book—the level of animation is so high that it raises the debate: what makes these films “live-action” besides the promotional label?

Story and Music Fans Adore

Regardless, this new Moana seems to be a retelling of the first tale, including fresh versions of the cherished songs. According to an official summary, “Moana answers the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, travels beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the infamous demigod Maui on an memorable journey to restore prosperity to her people.”

New Performers and Familiar Stars

Meanwhile, the teaser includes a snippet of the updated version on “How Far I’ll Go,” sung by Catherine Laga'aia. The new actor is stepping into the role of Moana from Auliʻi Cravalho, who portrayed the heroine in the original movies.

A key figure who returns is Dwayne Johnson, who will again be portraying Maui. Naturally, that role already resembled Johnson, so casting him in the live-action version appears reasonable.

Fan Favorite Character Makes an Appearance

Perhaps the highlight part of the trailer comes in the final shot. Moana's favorite chicken Hei Hei makes an appearance, squawking at the camera. How else to introduce the movie’s real icon?

Arrival in Theaters

The real-life take of Moana arrives in theaters on July 10, 2026.
