Loud Blasts and Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were audible in Tehran on Saturday. Simultaneously, two plumes of dense smoke were observed billowing over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The type of these blasts indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency reported, without immediately offer additional information.
Context: Escalating Strains and Prior Developments
The incident takes place against a background of sharply increased tensions in the region. Major developments leading up to this strike involve:
- US Military Buildup: A massive buildup of US naval forces in the region, featuring the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent discussions between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with suggestions of further talks planned.
- Public Statements: Prior to the attack, a senior US official had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or confront serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had charged the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. Officials rejected claims about missile development and protest deaths as unfounded.
The situation is fluid, with further updates expected as the situation develops.
