The Citizens 3-0 Man United: Lauren Hemp finds the net in City comfortable victory.

Much like Storm Claudia hit the northern region the previous evening, the home side blew the visitors away at the their home ground. It was a statement 3-0 win for Andrée Jeglertz’s side due to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a result that firmly established their title credentials as they reinforced their place at the league summit.

Back-to-Back Losses for Manchester United

This result represented back-to-back Women's Super League losses for the United manager's side for the initial occasion since spring 2024, putting them a sizable gap off the table toppers with their championship aspirations severely dented.

United’s capability to juggle league and European football with a thin roster has been a hotly discussed subject since they secured entry to the UCL. Considering the fixture list, it always felt like this was the matchday that would fully examine this fortitude. Unfortunately for the visitors, they seemed tired from start to finish, the historic win against the French side clearly having left its mark.

Lineup Adjustments

Skinner had attempted to freshen things up with a a few alterations. Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all added vigor, although the exclusion of the on-form Melvine Malard to the substitutes was questioned.

Overpowering Start

The storm clouds started to gather for the United boss and his side from the first whistle. This was a demonstration of the quality from Manchester City whose energetic forward line manipulated and pulled the visitors apart with a sublime opening period showing that saw them net a trio in just over twenty minutes.

Opening Threats

The early indicators came early when Miedema used her physicality to push Zigiotti off the ball, only to pull her shot off target. They extended their lead with two more goals just before the break. When Rose was permitted to maraud through the midfield from the back, the play became spacious for City. The key Kerstin Casparij picked the ball up on the right before delivering a pinpoint driven ball for Bunny Shaw to force home. Four minutes later, they had a third goal after a swift change in possession saw Hemp allowed the opportunity to strike a shot home from outside the box.

After the Break

The primary change came from the United manager at the interval as Malard came on for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was too late to change the course of the game. Ex- Manchester City player Park came most likely to score, hitting the woodwork, but the visitors were offensively poor and failed to produce a one shot on goal.

The hosts, meanwhile, could have added to their cushion when a superb Miedema through ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it did not affect the result to the winning team. After failing to overcome any team who ended above them in the prior term, Jeglertz’s side now have victories against the Gunners and United to position them in a commanding standing after nine matches.
